Specification
Model Scale - 1:24
Number of Parts - 617
Dimensions (mm) - L522 x W688
Skill Level - 4
Airfix Flying Hours - 6
Requires Painting - Yes

More Info

Research Help
Originally designed as a high-speed unarmed light bomber, the de Havilland D.H.98 Mosquito proved one of the most versatile aeroplanes of WWII, serving in a wide variety of roles, and excelling at each and every one.

The Mosquito was built almost entirely of plywood, sparing the use of metals that were then in short supply. From the maiden flight of its first prototype in November 1940 onwards, it demonstrated exceptional speed and agility on the power of its two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines.

Mosquitoes formed the core of RAF Bomber Command's Pathfinder Force, flying ahead of heavy night-bomber formations to mark targets with flares and operating Odoe radio-guidance equipment. The Mosquitoes also carried out many precision raids in their own right, relying on their speed for survival. Enemy fighters found them almost impossible to catch - Nazi air supremo, Hermann Göring, said the Mosquito's performance made him "green and yellow with envy".

A reconnaissance version of the aircraft took many vital photographs at both high and low altitudes, while Mosquito fighter-bombers served as rocket-firing close-support aircraft, as anti-shipping aircraft, as radar-equipped nightfighters, and as ground-attack aircraft striking enemy communications and supply lines. The "Wooden Wonder" continued in RAF service up until the mid-1950s.
Incredible Aeroplanes by Philip Jarrett

"It makes me furious when I see the Mosquito... The British... knock together a beautiful wooden aircraft that every piano factory over there is building, and they get it a speed which they have now increased yet again."
HERMANN GÖING, COMMANDER OF THE LUFTWAFFE

Airfix - Supermarine Spitfire Mk Ia

The Spitfire gained imortality during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940. The main role was to intercept and destroy the Luftwaffe's fighters whilst the Hurricanes of the RAF attacked the incoming bombers.

Specification
Model Scale - 1:72
Number of Parts - 29
Dimensions (mm) - L127mm x W155mm
Skill Level - 1
Airfix Flying Hours - 1
Requires Painting - Yes

Research Help
This superb fighter, designed by Reginald Mitchell, will always be remembered as the RAF's outstanding fighter of WWII, and especially for the vital part it played in the Battle of Britain. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the Spitfire combined all the most advanced features of its time:
A variable-pitch propeller;
All-metal monocoque construction;
A retractable undercarriage;
And an enclosed cockpit.

Its uniqueness lay in the elliptical wing. This deftly solved the problem of housing eight machine guns and a retracted undercarriage, while providing enough strength to withstand high-stress manoeuvres. There were a few drawbacks. The novel wing construction meant that the aircraft was relatively difficult to manufacture and early versions of the engine often cut out going into a dive.

But the Spitfire was a joy for an experianced pilot to fly, responsive to the slightest touch of the controls. Its blend of sleek elegance and fighting efficiency was summed up by RAF pilot Adolf "Sailor" Malan: "The Spitfire had style and was obviously a killer." The overall quality of the design was proved by the aircraft's ability to hold its own throughout the war in a string of different versions tailored to specialist roles and powered by progressively upgraded engines.
Incredible Aeroplanes by Philip Jarrett

"I think every Spitfire pilot fell in love with it as soon as he sat in that nice tight cosy office [RAF slang for the cockpit] with everything at hand."
BOB STANFORD-TUCK, RAF FIGHTER PILOT, WWII

A passenger airliner designed to fly at twice the speed of sound (Mach 2.05), first flown in 1969, Concorde service commenced in 1976 and continued for 27 years. It regularly flew from London Heathrow (BA) to New York JFK and Washington Dulles. It set many records, including circumnavigating the world in the time of 31 hours and 27 minutes 49 seconds flight, on 16 August 1995. She had an average cruise speed of Mach2.02 (about2,140km/h) with a maximum cruise altitude of 60,000 feet (18,300 metres).

Specification
Model Scale - 1:72
Number of Parts - 90
Dimensions (mm) - L865mm x W355mm
Skill Level - 3
Aifix Flying Hours - 4
Requires Painting - Yes

Research Help
The world's only successful supersonic passenger carrier, Concorde was an airliner of unsurpassed elegance and a miracle of engineering. It was able to carry 128 passengers at twice the speed of sound, and once seemed to embody the future of commercial aviation.

The British and French governments agreed to build Corncorde in November 1962 in the belief that airlines would inevitably want the fastest available airliner.

Concorde's performance was all that had been hoped for. Taling off from an ordinary runway, it could cruise at high altitude faster than a riffle bullet, without ruffling the comfort of its passengers.

It embodied numerious solutions to technical problems. Regardless of the aircraft's speed, variable-geometry engine air intakes kept the speed of the airflow to the engines below 300mph. A retractable visor protected the main windshield against kinetic heating at supersonic speeds. Most famously, the nose dropped to enhance the crew's view during landing, which was executed in a steep nose-up attitude.

Concorde proved expensive to maintain and run, and its passenger payload was small. Only 16 production Concordes were built, serving as luxury carriers with Air France and British Airways.

After more than 30 years in service, Concorde made its last scheduled flight on 24 October 2003.
Incredible Aeroplanes by Philip Jarrett

The Tempest was judged to have the best chance of catching this new weapon, capable of matching its speed at low level. Between June and August 1944, Tempest pilots claimed 800 of the 1,771 V-1s shot down by the RAF, 638 of them by the Newchurch Wing alone.

Airfix - Dornier Alpha Jet

A two-seat trainer and light strike / reconnaissance aircraft, the Alpha Jet has been used by a number of airforces across the world since it’s inaugural flight in 1973.

Specification.
Model Scale - 1:72
Number of Parts - 65
Dimensions (mm) - L170 x W127
Skill Level - 2
Airfix Flying Hours - 1
Requires Painting - Yes

Research Help
In the early 1960s, European air forces began to consider their requirements for the coming decades. One of the results was the emergence of a new generation of jet trainers to replace such classic aircraft as the Lockheed T-33 and Fouga Magister. The two main rivals in this exercise turned out to be the BAe Hawk and the Franco-German Dassault-Dornier Alpha Jet.

At the outset, the Alpha Jet had a lead, but the BAe Hawk would prove to be the winner in the race. However, the Alpha Jet has been built in good numbers and served with a number of air forces for several decades.

In the early 1960s, the British and French began a collaboration on development of what was supposed to be a supersonic jet trainer/light attack aircraft. The result of this collaboration, the SEPECAT Jaguar, proved to be an excellent aircraft, but its definition had evolved in the interim, and the type emerged as a full-sized strike fighter, with two-seat variants used for operational conversion to the type.

This left the original requirement unfulfilled and so the French began discussions with West Germany for collaboration. A joint specification was produced in 1968. The trainer was now subsonic, supersonic trainers having proven something of a dead end. A joint development and production agreement was signed in July 1969 which indicated that the two nations would buy 200 machines, each assembled in their own country.
